How to find public space in the middle of Tokyo

Intersection in Roppongi Azabu-Juban

After a couple weeks living in Tokyo, Roppongi specifically, Ive come to terms that there really isn't much "public space" or space that we in North America would consider as for the public realm.

I've stumbled across this quaint intersection a couple of time strolling through Roppongi but I never took the time to really appreciate the void it creates in a city of heavy levels of prescriptive volumes and spaces. A park is a park, and building is a building, this intersection divides a two-way street and channels shade, silence and serenity into an otherwise congestion of delivery vehicles, pedestrians, bikes and couriers.

Here's an audio snippet captured Sept.19.2018

I hope that this will be the first of several installments looking at this specific intersection. But who knows, another gem may catch my eye.

Overall, the area feels very European. Cafe's and restaurants line the streets, cobble stone pavers dress the streets and passer-bys regularly use this space as a rest stop before moving on with their day.

Can you see the red pin? Its right in the centre of the Azabu-Juban shopping district.
